FAR-REACHING AND UNPRECEDENTED STRUCTURAL CHANGES

Last 8 October, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) approved in the Republic of Korea the special report global warming of 1,5ºC. This document is expected to be a fundamental scientific contribution to the Climate Change Conference that will take place in Poland in December 2018, where the Paris Agreement will be reviewed by governments.

The report was prepared under the scientific direction of the three IPCC Working Groups: Group I is in charge of evaluating the physical foundations of climate change, Group II involves impacts, adaptation and vulnerability to climate change, and Group III deals with climate change mitigation.

In this document some messages are exposed as the real evidence of the consequences of a 1.5ºC global warming, such as the most extreme weather conditions, sea level rise and sea ice decrease in the Arctic, among others.

The limitation of this climate warming requires 45% decrease of the net human origin CO2 emission by 2030, compared to 2010, and consequently a rapid and far-reaching transitions in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport and cities.

This report shows that this limitation to an increase of 1.5ºC implies a greater reliance on techniques for absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere, although most of them are not still demonstrated on a large scale. It is remarkable that some of these techniques may involve significant risks for sustainable development.

This Special Report on Global Warming of 1,5ºC is the first in a series of reports to be prepared in the sixth IPCC evaluation cycle. Next year the IPCC will publish the special report of the oceans and the cryosphere in a changing climate and climate change and land, which will analyse the impact of climate change on land use.
