LIFE Platform meeting on Climate Action and the Building sector

The last 17th and 18th of June a new platform meeting was held in Brussels under the heading “Climate Action and the Building sector”. This two-day meeting brought together beneficiaries of the LIFE programme and the other EU funding mechanisms to exchange good practices around stronger energy performance in new buildings. It was also focused on how the building sector can become resilient to future climatic conditions and extreme weather events. The gather included:

  • Plenary sessions on the policy context, technological solutions and financial mechanisms to achieve nearly-zero energy and climate resilient buildings
  • Workshops, a poster session and field visits

The meeting was hosted by the LIFE BE REEL! Integrated Project and LIFE Lugo + Biodinámico.

Buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the European Union. The efficiency of energy use for heating, cooling, lighting, etc., the thermal insulation and/or their use, determine the level of energy consumption and CO2 emissions that a building is responsible for. For this reason, it is necessary to introduce new solutions to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings with the end goal of a decarbonized building stock by 2050. Some of these solutions will be the improvement of building materials with enhanced insulation properties, energy saving systems and devices, renewable energy generation capacity, etc.

On the other hand, it is also necessary ensuring the resilience of the building sector attempting to minimize the adverse effects of climate change on infrastructures. Some measures are actually of dual use, to minimize and adapt the infrastructure to climate change impacts, as for example, reducing the energy needed for heating in buildings, while also insulating the building from the higher external temperatures on warm days.

IDOM is part of the NEEMO consortium, an external consultant for the European Commission and the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EASME). As part of the consortium, IDOM is responsible for the technical and financial monitoring of LIFE projects implemented both in Spain and Portugal.

In this sense, the environmental team of IDOM, as well as other NEEMO´s team colleagues, have been part of the coordination of this platform meeting. Furthermore, IDOM’s Head of Sustainable Buildings, Blas Beristain, gave a presentation on his experience developing NZEB during the second day of the platform meeting.
